Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who can get a Library Card?
A renewable three year library card, including full reciprocal privileges with other Library Network libraries, is available to those who reside in Madison Heights, or own property in Madison Heights. Those who attend school or work in Madison Heights; but live outside the Library Network service area, may obtain a one year library card that is limited to the Madison Heights Library. In order to obtain a library card, you must show proof of one of the above requirements. A valid driver license is the most acceptable proof of residency. A utility bill in your name, a copy of a lease in your name, school ID, state ID card or city tax bill will be accepted as proof of meeting the conditions to receive a library card. Children under the age of 16 will require a parent or guardian's signature before a card can be issued to them. Anyone between sixteen and eighteen must have a valid driver license or school ID to apply for a library card.
2. Who can check materials out of the library?
Anyone who has a valid Madison Heights library card, a valid library card from a reciprocal privilege Library Network library, or by special agreement, Troy residents may check material out from the Madison Heights Public Library. The Library no longer participates in the MICHICARD program. The staff at the circulation desk will check out your books and other materials. Non-residents who do not qualify for a card as outlined above may elect to pay an annual fee to borrow library materials. Ask the staff for details.
3. Where is the Card Catalogue?
The Library now has a Web Based Catalogue, eLibrary, that is an electronic card catalogue. In addition to the records of the Madison Heights Public Library, almost sixty other library collections make up this shared database.
4. Where do I return materials?
Materials may be returned to the Book Return at the circulation desk during hours that the library is open. You may also return materials to the Main library at the Book Drop located on the north entrance of the Library. You may also return books to a library that is a member of The Library Network. *Please note that any materials that are returned to the Troy Public Library or any library in Macomb County, may not be received at Madison Heights Public Library until well after the due date, in which case overdue charges will be assessed.
5. What if a book is not on the shelf, or the library does not own it?
If a book is not on the shelf, check with one of the Reference staff. They can tell you if the material is checked out or missing. If the book is checked out, they can place a reserve on the book for you. You will be notified when the book becomes available. If the book is missing, the library staff can help you to determine which nearby libraries have the book or you can place an intra-library loan request for the book. You will be notified when it is received. Requests can be made through the TLN Catalog.
