Code Enforcement Division

It is the mission of the Code Enforcement Division of the Community Development Department to work in partnership with the people and businesses of the City of Madison Heights to promote and maintain a safe and desirable living and working environment. We help maintain or improve the quality of your community in three ways.

Regulations


Examples of regulations that the Code Enforcement Division enforces (non-inclusive list):
  • Blight on private and public properties. (old furniture, car parts, appliances, etc)
  • Building Code violations (building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, etc.), including construction or change of occupancy without permits
  • Conditions of an existing structure that constitute a clear and present danger to the public
  • Graffiti
  • Illegal dumping
  • Inoperable and abandoned vehicles on private property
  • Lawn parking
  • Madison Heights Property Maintenance Code (minimum standards for safe and sanitary housing)
  • Signs, including signs in public right-of-way (e.g. ground between sidewalk and curb, and utility poles), failure to have required permits, illegal inflatable displays and balloons
  • Snow removal from public sidewalks
  • Swimming pool fences
  • Weeds on private property
  • Zoning Ordinance requirements for structures (such as use, location, configuration and size) and land use requirements

Seeking Relief


If you are seeking relief from conditions on a property in your neighborhood, there are a number of options available to you:
  • File a complaint with the City of Madison Heights Code Enforcement Division. You may remain anonymous as long as officers can see the violation without entering the property.
  • If you have one, attend your neighborhood or condominium association meetings, and get involved with solving the problem.
  • Make contact with the responsible party. Describe your perception of the problem. Discuss how the problem affects you and possible solutions.
